Typescript of Auguste de Châtillon's memoirs of his time in the United States, edited by his cousin, Horace de Châtillon. He recounts his arrival in New Orleans; his travel around Matamoros, Mexico, with the American army during the Mexican War; his painting of the Battle of Resaca de la Palma; his career as an artist in New Orleans, especially with the theater; yellow fever in New Orleans; the exhibition of his Mexican War painting in New York City; and other events that occurred while he was in New York. References to General Zachary Taylor appear frequently.

Auguste de Châtillon was a French painter, sculptor, and poet. Unable to make a living in France, he moved to the United States, settling in New Orleans, La., between 1844 and 1851. While in the United States he wrote poetry and painted a scene of the Battle of Resaca de la Palma (May 9, 1846), one of Zachary Taylor's victories in the Mexican War. Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), the twelfth president of the United States. In 1841, he was appointed to the command of the Sourthern Division of the United States. In the spring of 1845, Taylor appointed to command the Army of Occupation stationed in Corpus Christi. In May 1846, Taylor led his army into north Mexico. Following the battle of Monterey, Taylor was ordered to join General Winfield Scott at the siege of Veracruz. Taylor's victory at at the Battle of Buena Vista made him a national hero....
